Wood Pellet Grades Explained: ENplus A1, A2 and Industrial Pellets

Wood pellets serve two very different markets: residential heating, where quality is tightly specified, and industrial power and heat, where volume and consistency matter most.

Residential grades

Residential pellets are classified under ISO 17225-2 as A1, A2 and B. ENplus is the most widely used certification scheme built on that standard. ENplus A1 pellets have an ash content of 0.7% or less; A2 allows up to 1.2%. Pellets are usually 6 mm or 8 mm in diameter with moisture of 10% or less.

Industrial grades

Industrial pellets (classes I1 to I3 in ISO 17225-2) allow higher ash and are bought by power stations and large heat producers, usually in bulk by vessel. Contracts focus on net calorific value, ash, chlorine, fines and durability.

Sustainability evidence

Many buyers, especially in Europe, require proof that the wood comes from responsibly managed sources, for example FSC® or PEFC chain of custody, or SBP certification for biomass energy. Confirm which evidence your market requires.

Packing and shipment

Residential pellets are sold in 15 kg bags on pallets or in big bags, shipped by truck or container. Industrial pellets move in bulk. Include grade, diameter, packing, volume and delivery point in your quotation request.

Frequently asked questions

Is ENplus A1 the same as ISO 17225-2 A1?
ENplus is based on ISO 17225-2 classes but adds its own certification of production and trade, with some stricter requirements. A product meeting the ISO class is not ENplus-certified unless certified under the scheme.
