Palm Oil and Soybean Oil in Wholesale Trade: Forms, Grades and Packing

Palm and soybean oil are the two highest-volume vegetable oils in world trade. Each is traded in several forms, and the form you specify determines price, use and packing.

Palm oil forms

Crude palm oil (CPO) is the raw oil for refining. RBD palm oil is refined, bleached and deodorised for food use. Palm olein is the liquid fraction for frying oil; palm stearin is the solid fraction for margarine and shortening.

Soybean oil forms

Crude degummed soybean oil is traded for refining. Refined soybean oil is ready for bottling or food manufacturing. Specifications cover free fatty acids, peroxide value, colour and moisture.

Packing formats

Bulk liquid moves in flexitanks or tank containers; bottled oil in PET or jerrycans; and industrial formats in drums or IBCs. The format depends on your filling, storage and distribution setup.

What to include in your RFQ

State the oil and form (for example RBD palm olein or refined soybean oil), quantity, packing, destination port, Incoterm, required certificates and any sustainability documentation your market requires.
