The main types
Basmati is an aromatic, extra-long grain that elongates on cooking and is often aged. Jasmine is a fragrant, slightly sticky long grain. Long-grain white rice is the general-purpose staple for retail and food service.
Each type is offered as white, parboiled or brown, and sometimes as steamed or sella variants; name the exact form you need.
Specifications to check
Common points are broken grain percentage (for example 5%, 10% or 25%), moisture (commonly max. 14%), average grain length, chalky and damaged grains, foreign matter and polishing. For basmati, purity of variety and ageing period are also specified.
Packing and shipment
Rice is commonly packed in 25 kg or 50 kg PP or jute bags, or in retail packs from 1 kg to 10 kg under the buyer's or a private label, and shipped in 20-foot containers. Fumigation and phytosanitary certificates are usually required.
What to include in your RFQ
Give the type and form, broken percentage, packing and labelling, quantity per container and per month, destination port, Incoterm and the documents your customs authority requires.
