Hot-Rolled Steel Coils: Grades, Dimensions and Buying for Processing

Hot-rolled coil (HRC) is the base flat-steel product for service centres, pipe makers and fabricators. Buying well means specifying precisely, because grade and dimensions determine both price and usability.

Grades

Common commercial grades include S235 and S355 structural qualities to European norms, with equivalents under other standards. State the standard and grade you work to, not just a generic description.

Dimensions and coil weight

Specify thickness range (for example 1.5–12 mm), width (for example 1,000–1,500 mm), whether mill edge or trimmed, and the coil weight range your decoilers can handle. Tolerances follow the agreed standard.

Surface and processing

HRC is supplied as-rolled or pickled and oiled for better surface and further processing. If you slit or cut to length, say so — it affects the width and coil format you should buy.

What to include in your RFQ

State grade and standard, thickness, width, coil weight, surface condition, quantity per month or shipment, destination port, Incoterm and the mill test certificates you require.
