The P1020A reference grade
Most primary ingot offers refer to P1020A: minimum 99.70% aluminium with maximum 0.10% silicon and 0.10% iron. This is the chemistry behind the London Metal Exchange high-grade primary aluminium contract and the usual starting point for remelting and alloying.
Higher-purity grades exist for specialised uses. If your process needs tighter limits on particular elements, put the full chemistry in the request instead of a grade name alone.
Brand, origin and certificates
Ask which smelter produced the metal, whether the brand is LME-registered, and for a mill certificate of analysis tied to the actual lots. Country-of-origin rules and sanctions screening also apply in many markets, so origin should be stated, not left open.
Packing and shipment format
Ingots typically weigh around 20–25 kg each and are strapped into bundles of roughly one tonne, which load efficiently into 20-foot containers. Larger volumes may move breakbulk. Confirm bundle weight, strapping and marking so your receiving and stock systems can handle them.
Pricing basis
Aluminium is commonly priced as an LME reference plus or minus a premium that reflects region, delivery and timing. Agree the pricing period (for example average of a month or a fixed date) at quotation stage.
Frequently asked questions
- What does P1020A mean?
- It is a primary aluminium designation: at least 99.70% aluminium with silicon and iron each capped at 0.10%.
- Is secondary (recycled) aluminium ingot the same?
- No. Secondary ingot is usually an alloy made from scrap, such as foundry alloys, and is specified by alloy designation and chemistry rather than by primary purity.
