Eucalyptus Logs and Woodchips: A Buyer's Guide for Pulp, MDF and Energy

Roundwood and woodchips feed pulp mills, panel plants and biomass energy. The end use determines the specification, so buyers should start there.

Logs: key specifications

Logs are specified by species, with or without bark, length (for example 2.0–2.5 m), small-end diameter range, straightness and freshness. Pulp-quality logs prioritise fibre and bark removal; sawlogs prioritise diameter and defects.

Woodchips by end use

Pulp chips need clean, debarked wood with a controlled chip size and low fines. MDF chips tolerate a broader mix. Energy chips are judged on moisture, ash and calorific value rather than fibre quality.

Certification and documents

Many mills require FSC® or PEFC chain-of-custody claims, and energy buyers may require SBP or other sustainability evidence. Ask that any claim appears on the invoice with the supplier's valid certificate code.
